Job Summary
As the WASH Coordinator, you will serve as the mission’s technical lead, shaping and overseeing SI’s water, sanitation, and hygiene strategy in Maiduguri and surrounding regions. You’ll ensure that programs are relevant, high quality, and aligned with both local needs and donor requirements, while also supporting team capacity, innovation, and knowledge sharing.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership

Design and implement WASH sector strategy aligned with SI’s mission

Monitor donor trends and sector dynamics

Initiate and contribute to program development and diagnostics
Program Quality
-
Validate technical designs, budgets, and implementation approaches
-
Ensure compliance with humanitarian standards and sustainability practices
-
Monitor results and guide course-correction where needed

Technical Support & Coordination

Supervise WASH program managers and field staff

Approve project indicators and tools

Participate in monthly reviews of budget, logistics, and operations

Support procurement and ensure technical quality of materials and services
Capitalization & Learning

Promote use of technical guides and knowledge tools

Build a network of WASH actors and experts

Lead documentation of best practices and lessons learned
Team Management
-
Lead training, performance review, and mentoring for WASH team
-
Ensure safety, security, and well-being of supervised staff
-
Facilitate workshops and technical exchanges
External Representation
-
Liaise with donors, government, UN, and INGO partners
-
Represent SI at technical meetings and WASH clusters
-
Contribute to funding proposals and donor reporting

Requirements
Education:
-
B.Sc./HND in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Public Health, Environmental Health, or related field
Experience:
-
3–5 years of progressive WASH leadership in humanitarian settings
-
1–2 years as WASH Coordinator OR 2–3 years as Deputy WASH Coordinator OR 3–5 years as WASH Program Manager
-
Experience with SI is a strong asset
Skills:
-
Technical expertise in infrastructure design, hygiene promotion, and emergency WASH response
-
Strong grasp of project cycle management and donor compliance
-
Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring ability
-
Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and digital M&E tools
-
Knowledge of local languages in Northern Nigeria is an advantage
