Police Duty Solicitor at Global Rights: Join the Fight Against SGBV

Global Rights, a leading human rights and governance NGO, is seeking a dedicated Police Duty Solicitor to provide pro bono legal assistance to survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). This vital role involves legal representation, advocacy, and close collaboration with justice sector actors to ensure survivors receive essential support.

Key Details

Position: Police Duty Solicitor
Location: Kaduna, Kano, and Sokoto States
Duration: August 2025 to March 2026 (8-month contract)
Target Communities: This role will specifically serve designated communities in the three states, including Kawo and Kofar Gabas in Kano, Shuni and Chimola in Sokoto, and Rigachikun and Zonkwa in Kaduna.

Responsibilities

As a Police Duty Solicitor, you will be responsible for:

Providing free, rights-based legal support to SGBV survivors at police stations.
Representing clients during police questioning, bail hearings, and other legal procedures.
Facilitating referrals to courts, Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), and other necessary services.
Maintaining accurate and confidential records of all legal services and client interactions.
Collaborating with law enforcement and other community response teams to improve outcomes for survivors.
Participating in trainings on SGBV, trauma-informed care, and legal ethics.
Preparing and submitting timely reports to the project team.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Barrister-at-Law (BL) are required; you must be called to the Nigerian Bar.
Experience: A minimum of 3 years of post-call experience, preferably in criminal law, human rights, or legal aid work.
SGBV Experience: Demonstrated experience working with survivors of SGBV or other vulnerable groups is a strong advantage.
Knowledge: A strong understanding of the Nigerian legal and criminal justice systems, particularly as they relate to gender justice.
Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Language: Proficiency in both English and Hausa.
